Calls grow for system overhaul as Government relaxes visa requirements for another sector

Today the government has relaxed visa requirements for overseas builders, carpenters and people working in the fishing industry amid widespread labour shortages.

MP for Central Ayrshire and member of the cross-party UK Trade and Business Commission Philippa Whitford said,

“Since Brexit and the loss of Freedom of Movement, labour shortages have impacted almost every public service and sector of the economy and will continue to act as a handicap against growth until fully addressed.

“Easing visa restrictions for fishermen and builders is a positive step but, rather than an industry by industry sticking plaster approach, the Government should consider an overhaul of the whole visa system as recommended by the UK Trade and Business Commission. This should include a reciprocal youth mobility scheme which would be particularly useful for industries like agriculture, construction and hospitality.”
