Beef with Canada shows risks of CPTPP to British standards

Negotiations on a post-Brexit trade deal between the UK and Canada have collapsed, after nearly two years, over the import of Canadian hormone-treated beef to the UK and British cheese to Canada.

This means that the UK’s trading terms with Canada will now be worse than when it was part of the EU's deal with the country.

Paul Blomfield MP, Co-convenor of the cross-party UK Trade and Business Commission said,

“Canada now joins the USA and India as deals we were promised by the Government to replace lost EU trade but which are now proving too difficult and costly.

“The collapse of the talks also highlights the risks to UK standards and British farming by the Government's plan to join a trade bloc on the other side of the world, the CPTPP. We should instead boost growth by removing barriers with our closest and largest market, the EU.”
